Valter Sanches: We urge you to put an end to the intimidation, harassment, detention and arrest of trade union leaders and members
IndustriALL General Secretary Valter Sanchez addressed the Minister of Labour and Social Protection of the Republic of Belarus, Iryna Kastevitch, to put an end to the persecution of trade unionists.
He wrote about this in a letter and noted that pressure, threats, detentions and arrests of trade union members in Belarus continue despite the fact that at the last meeting of the International Labour Conference these problems were widely discussed with representatives of the Ministry of Labour. As an example, he referred to the recent arrest of Vadim Mikhailov, deputy chairman of the BNP (Belarusian Free Trade Union) primary organization at OJSC Naftan: “We consider the arrest of the trade union activist to be part of the continuing pressure on independent trade unions”.
In addition, Valter Sanchez noted that the recent amendment to the Labour Code of the Republic of Belarus allows employers to dismiss workers in connection with serving an administrative sentence in the form of administrative detention, which will be widely used by employers in order to get rid of trade union activists who are defending the fundamental rights of workers.
“IndustriALL Global Union calls on you, in your capacity is Minister of Labour and Social Protection, to put an end to the intimidation, harassment, detention and arrest of trade union leaders and members conducting lawful trade union activities, especially at OJSC Naftan, as recommended by the ILO Committee on the Application of Standards and in order to comply with ILO Convention No. 87 “On Freedom of Association” ratified by Belarus”, said Valter Sanchez.
