An Urgent Appeal to Support Independent Trade Unions in Belarus
Dear colleagues,
The Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BKDP) has informed us about the worrying anti-union developments in the RUPP "Granite" company in Mikashevichi, Brest region. Oleg Stakhaevich, the leader of the newly formed independent union at the RUPP “Granite” has been illegally dismissed on February 2012. The contract of the wife of another union activist, Liudmila Litvinka, was terminated. Following the set-up of the independent union, the RUPP “Granite” management has launched a series of action in order to put pressure on the union members as well as to deter other workers from joining the union. Despite the local union following the procedure laid on by Belarusian legislation, the management of the company refused to recognise it and to provide it with a legal address. The ITUC has written a letter of protest to the President asking for the reinstatement of Oleg Stakhaevich and Liudmila Litvinka, the recognition of the RUPP “Granite” independent company union and its free operation from any interference.
We kindly request you to write to the Belarusian authorities with copy to the company (see addresses below) and attach a model letter to this effect, with translations into Spanish and French following as soon as possible. Please send a copy to the ITUC Human and Trade Union Rights Department ([email protected]), PERC ( [email protected] ) and to BKDP ([email protected] ) and to the Belarus embassy in your country, if available.
In Solidarity,
Department of Human and Trade Union Rights, ITUC
