BKDP has organized solidarity campaign with Elena Zakhozhaya
The BKDP has made an appeal to the national trade union centers and international trade union organizations to express their solidarity support to Elena Zakhozhaya, chairperson of the primary-level organization of the Belarusian Independent Union (BNP) at OAO “Belshina” Tire Company. Elena has already been on hunger strike for ten days. The BKDP asked its colleagues to forward protest letters to General Director of OAO “Belshina” Dimitry Katerinich, Chairperson of “Belneftekhim” Concern Alexander Borovski and Chairperson of Bobruisk Town Executive Council Mikhail Bondarenko, who are responsible for discriminating the independent union.

The hunger strike by our colleague Elena Zakhozhaya (electrician), deputy chairperson of the primary-level organization of the BNP at OAO “Belshina” Tire Company is being lasting for ten days.
The management of the OAO “Belshina” Tire Company, which has been waging a continuous campaign for eliminating independent union at the enterprise, forced Elena Zakhozhaya to resort to this extreme protest. Because of the unprecedented pressure on the part of the enterprise employers, the local union was reduced by 3 times. The directors of the company do everything so as social guaranties stipulated by the collective agreement, which members of independent union have joined, were not applied to them. On occasion of the chemical workers professional holiday the members of independent union in revenge were not included into the bonus pay-roll despite the fact that they all have dozens of years of service at the enterprise. In addition, they were deprived of extra allowances normally paid to annual holiday and healthcare benefits too. Whereas the members of the state-controlled union have received all these benefits and allowances.
Moreover, the company administration refuses to provide legal address to our organization and therefore, the union cannot get registration in the local bodies.
The Prosecutor office, where union activists were trying to get protection, did not find any violations on the part of the employer. Elena Zakhozhaya then approached the Head of the “Belnefekhim” Concern (Former Ministry of chemical industries) Alexander Borovski, but this too did not change the situation for the better. The refusal of the local court to initiate the proceedings against the facts of trade union discrimination became a last drop of patience that induced Elena Zakhozhaya to start hunger strike. There is a direct evidence of the boundless neglect of law and morality on the part of the OAO “Belshina” management, public prosecutors, “Belneftekhim” Concern and the Bobruisk court.
