SPM AND MPRA JOIN FORCES
On 28-29 August, 2010 Minsk hosted a joint seminar for the representatives of Free Trade Union of Metalworkers (SPM) of Belarus and the Interregional Trade Union of Automobile Workers (MPRA) Russia. Organizations have been cooperating already for nearly 2 years for the aims of developing both trade unions and protecting their members. Both unions are affiliated to the International Federation of Metalworkers.
The issues of organizing, union membership motivation as well as organization of cooperation and solidarity activities aimed at protecting rights and interests of workers have been discussed at the seminar. The event was attended by the Chairman of the MPRA Alexei Etmanov, chairman of SPM Vasili Levchenkov and other leaders and activists of both unions.
The MPRA and SPM have plans in view to establish Metalworkers’ Confederation affiliating independent unions of Russia and Belarus.
The Interregional Union of Automobile Workers was established in February 2007. The union has 14 affiliated primary-level organizations. The MPRA is known throughout Russia and across the world for organizing strikes in the years of 2005-2008 at Ford companies in Vsevolzhsk and “Avtovaz (Tolyati).
