WORKERS OF OAO "POLOTSK FIBERGLASS" COMPANY TRUST FREE TRADE UNION
The workers and employees of OAO Polotsk Fiberglass Company are dissatisfied with their wages and working conditions. They authorized company free trade union to negotiate with employer for higher wages and better working conditions. It became known from the regular newsletter "Setklyashka” published by the company union organization affiliated to the Belarusian Free Trade Union (SPB).
At a general meeting of the operators and foremen assistants of the shop No.7, shift No. 2, held on 16 September, 2010, the workers have discussed their current wages and existing working conditions. Bringing to a stop of one of the two glass-furnaces for making vitreous fiber as well as personnel reshuffle have led to a very high extent of work intensity in the shop. At some workplaces operators of PNSV (production of continuous glass fibers) are obliged after every three minutes to takeoff ready-made products, verify its quality, send products for acceptance inspection and supply themselves with consumable materials. As the operators say, "... even there is no time to go to WC …"
The SPB primary union organization activists of the OAO “Polotsk Fiberglass” Company have interviewed the workers of shop № 7, shift number 2, and the obtained results were not encouraging:
To the question: "Do you go for dinner to canteen during the shift work?" - only 3 workers out of 20 said that they have such an opportunity to have their dinner in the company canteen.
To the question: "What should be the size of wages having such work intensity?" – 14 workers identified wages from 1, 7 mln. up to 3,0 mln. of Belarusian rubles (average of 2,4 million rubles). The current gross wage of the PNSV operators of shift number 2 amounts to 1.4 million rubles.
At the meeting the workers have taken the following decisions:
1.To approve the workers’ demands for wage increase and reducing work intensity in line with results of the interviews.
2. To entrust the SPB primary union organization of OAO "Polotsk-Fiberglass Company to represent the interests of operators and foremen assistants of the shop № 7, shift № 2 in collective bargaining with employer on wage increase and work intensity reduction.
The workers of other shifts also have authorized free trade union to negotiate on their behalf with the employer on improving working conditions. The relevant document on this request has been confirmed by signatures.
On 22 September the free trade union addressed the Director General of the company with the demand to start collective negotiations on amending and supplementing the existing agreement between the employer of the Polotsk Fiberglass " Company and the SPB primary organization of OAO" Polotsk Fiberglass” Company. During the negotiations the two parties will focus on demand for wage increase and for better working conditions for operators and foremen assistants of the shop № 7.
After sending "Demand on starting collective bargaining» notification the free trade union has received the reply from the employer in which the employer requested the union to submit its proposals on amending and supplementing the existing Agreement to the Commission on Collective Bargaining for prior assessment.
On 27 September the free trade union has forwarded its proposals to increase wages, equip special room where the workers could have their meals and make repair of toilet room in the shop No.7.
