STATEMENT
of the Council of Trade Union Association of Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BKDP)
Minsk, 21 December 2010
The Council of Trade Union Association of Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions expresses its deep concern about events that have taken place during and after the Presidential elections on December 19-20 in Minsk. We are indignant at massacre and reprisals, committed by security forces at the Independence Square in Minsk on 19 and 20 December against many of the participants of the rally which was attended by dozens of thousands of people. “The motives causing brutal beatings and violence against human beings can neither be explained nor excused.
The regime once again has clearly demonstrated its anti-democratic nature, a complete disregard for fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens ensured by the Constitution including the right of public expression of the views concerning the process and results of Presidential elections. Hundreds of people have become victims of unjustified brutal massacre and repression including the members of independent trade unions affiliated to BKDP. Administrative arrests have been brought against a number of our colleagues. Among the sentenced to different terms of imprisonment are the President of Belarusian Free Trade Union (SPB) Michael Kovalkov, member of SPB Alexei Kovtun, member of Belarusian of Radio and Electronics Workers’ Union (REP) Alexander Tysevich, member of Free Metalworkers’ Union (SPM) Vladimir Sergeev and some others.
We express our strong and resolute protest against another violation of human rights in the country, including civil rights and freedoms of members of our unions and declare our support and solidarity to the victims and their families. Also we have to warn the regime that we shall immediately inform on these violations our colleagues and friends in the international trade union movement including the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Pan-European Regional Council of Trade Unions (PERC), numerous other international and national trade union organizations across the world with whom the BKDP and its affiliates maintains friendly cooperation ties.
