BKDP COUNCIL URGES ON IMMEDIATE RETURN OF EQUIPMENT AND INTERNAL DOCUMENTS OF REP UNION SEIZED DURING SEARCH
The BKDP regards the search in REP premises as another gross violation of trade union rights since the immunity of offices and assets belonging to the unions are protected by law and conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO) ratified by the Republic of Belarus. It is said in the Statement adopted today by the BKDP Council.
STATEMENT
OF COUNCIL OF BELARUSIAN CONGRESS OF DEMOCRATIC TRADE UNIONS
On January 14 of the current year the state security forces (KGB) under the pretext of checking the usage of REP premises during the presidential campaign as the headquarters of one of the candidates for the presidency have searched the office of the Belarusian trade union of radio and electronic industry (REP). As a result of the search which lasted several hours the office equipment belonging to the union and part of the internal documentation was seized. As a consequence, the current activities of the organization have been completely paralyzed.
The BKDP regards this action as another gross violation of trade union rights since the immunity of offices and assets belonging to the unions are protected by law and conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO) ratified by the Republic of Belarus. We warn that all responsibility for the consequences of what has happened rests with the Belarusian government.
We urge that the principal assessment of the actions committed by certain persons leading to the act of outrage against the office of REP should be given and we demand the immediate return of the seized equipment and documents.
