EU is close to imposing new sanctions against Belarus in order to resolve the migrant crisis

The European Union may impose new sanctions against Belarus in the near future. This is reported by Reuters, citing diplomatic sources.

The sanctions target about 30 Belarusian individuals and legal entities, including Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei and Belarusian airline Belavia. They may be approved as early as next week.

According to the agency, on Wednesday, 27 EU ambassadors intend to agree officially that the growing number of migrants on the Belarusian-Polish border is a “hybrid war”.

The diplomats also say that the EU countries are considering expanding economic sanctions against Belarus which were introduced in July.

Earlier, the Head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU would study the issue of imposing sanctions against airlines of third countries because of the migration situation at the Polish-Belarusian border.
